Flintholm Swimming Pool

At the end of June 2017, Flintholm Svømmehal opened the doors to their newly renovated and modern facilities. The renovation of the swimming pool in Flintholm is the last piece of the modernization that Flintholm has undergone in recent years. At Lumega, we were lucky enough to be a part of this urban renewal when we were tasked with delivering an energy-efficient LED system for the new and modern facilities in Flintholm Swimming Pool.

About Flintholm Swimming Pool

The public swimming pool in Flintholm was one of the municipality's top priorities when the city was up for renewal. The swimming pool and the associated sports halls are an important gathering point for professional athletes as well as families in Flintholm. The goal of the renewal was to make Flintholm Swimming Pool the preferred place for all residents in the area to engage in fun and healthy activities. As part of a modernization process, the lighting in the swimming pool should of course also be modern - and this is where Lumega comes in.

Flintholm Swimming Pool or Water & Wellness Flintholm, opened on June 22, 2017, as the first new swimming pool in Frederiksberg since 1934, the 5,500 m2 is divided into three zones for swimming, spa and gymnastics.

Challenge

Flintholm Svømmehal needed LED downlights for their renewal process, and although these are fairly common products for us to produce and deliver, there were some pretty important requirements that needed to be met. First and foremost, these downlights had to be very powerful, as the halls have very high ceilings. The entire project spread over 6400 square meters, with a 25 meter pool, wellness areas and a café. So a lot of lighting was needed.

Especially the downlights that were to be installed in the actual swimming area by the pools had to have a very specific durability. These downlights had to have the right IP (ingress protection) rating, which is a rating that classifies the waterproofness of a luminaire. As the downlights to be installed in the swimming pool would be exposed to moisture on a daily basis, their IP rating needed to be very high. However, a high IP rating would not be enough on its own, as the vapors in a swimming pool contain both chlorine and ammonia, which can quickly corrode LED luminaires.

As this was a modernization, the LED luminaires had to be of the highest energy efficiency and as environmentally friendly as possible. Municipalities in Denmark work under tight budgets, so parameters such as energy efficiency and longevity could not be deprioritized in any way.

Lighting solution

At Lumega, energy efficiency and longevity are a matter of course and an untouchable part of our company vision. We never compromise on parameters like these, which made high energy efficiency and longevity easy promises to keep. The choice of luminaires for the Flintholm swimming pool was the ever-popular NS11 downlights. With an energy efficiency of 84LPW and an LED lifetime of a guaranteed 50,000 hours, the economic requirements were met with NS11.

NS11 was the right choice for the swimming pool facilities as they come with different lumen outputs. This means that the NS11 luminaires for the high-ceilinged halls were set to be powerful, while the luminaires for the changing rooms and café were less powerful and suitable for the lower ceiling heights. As the swimming pool is a public facility with many visitors, the chances of vandalism unmistakably increase as well. The NS11 was therefore also chosen on the parameter that it is an incredibly robust luminaire with a high IK10 rating (impact protection). The aforementioned IP rating, which assesses water resistance, is also high with a rating of IP54, which keeps all moisture away from the diode and internal luminaire. To address the issue of chlorine and ammonia gases in the swimming pool, we supplied the NS11 with an additional coating. This coating makes the diode resistant to the abrasive gases such as chlorine and ammonia. Many of the products in our portfolio can be supplied with an additional coating if you need it for your project.

Lumega was chosen for this task based on a free and non-binding project assessment. We supply LED systems for projects of all kinds all over the world, and we always offer a free and non-binding project assessment. This assessment can give you an estimate of what it will cost and what savings will be achieved with an LED system for your particular lighting project.
