Sandkajen Nordhavn
Architectural lighting at its best. The modern city district has several gifts. Not only the lighting characterizes the area with several interesting architectural experiences.
About Sandkajen in Nordhavn
Nordhavn is arguably one of the newest, but also most innovative, districts of Copenhagen. Developers from all over the world are vying for their share of building old warehouses and silos into modern apartments. The public areas and piers in Nordhavn must, of course, be as modern as the new apartment buildings in the area. At Lumega, we were given the task of illuminating the pier area called Sandkajen to match the modern architecture of the area.
Decorative lighting concept
Tasked with providing public LED lighting for a pier that needed to appear in the same modern style as the rest of the area, but could withstand a harsh outdoor environment, we set to work with our lighting designers. The pier itself measures 400 meters in total and was expected to become one of Nordhavn's most popular gathering points. The sand quay was to attract both the 1700 people living along the pier, but also tourists and visitors from other parts of Copenhagen.
As the modern residential area of Nordhavn, the luminaires needed to be decorative to match the architecture, but also functional and powerful enough to safely illuminate walkways. Safety must of course be the main priority, as poorly lit steps can result in people falling and hurting themselves, or in this case, falling into the water. And the water at Sandkajen presented several challenges. Salt water is incredibly abrasive on any lighting fixture. Salt water, like chlorine, can easily penetrate a luminaire and cause internal moisture damage.
In our considerations before choosing the right LED solution for this project, we also took into account the fact that Sandkajen was expected to become one of Copenhagen's most popular hangouts on late summer evenings. When many people gather in and pass by one place, the chance of vandalism is unmistakably greater. The increased chance of vandalism meant that Lumega had to deliver a robust LED solution that could withstand hard knocks.
The lighting solution
We realized fairly quickly that our NS96 was made for the job of illuminating the Sandkajen. Our lighting designers wanted to use the NS96 because of its decorative, yet functional, lighting capacity. The NS96 is a very compact LED spot designed specifically for embedding in soil, concrete or, in this case, wood. As you can see in the images, the NS96 luminaires are mounted so that they lie horizontally with the boards, providing a beautiful and decorative light, while also making steps clearly visible so people don't fall into the water.
Technically, the NS96 was also the optimal choice for this job. Developed as an underground and recessed spotlight, the NS96 is extremely robust and can withstand pressure and impact up to 2 tons. This means it is virtually a vandal-resistant luminaire. The NS96's robustness is due to its construction, which is made entirely of copper and stainless steel. NS96 is also waterproof with an IP67 certificate, which means that even salt water is kept out.
The solution for Sandkajen was developed with careful consideration of both the practical and decorative requirements. In close collaboration with our lighting designers and the contractors on the project, the right solution was found that met all of the project-specific requirements.
