Guide: Everything you need to consider when lighting stairs

Whether you're lighting your staircase at home or a staircase in a public space, there are a number of factors to consider. In this week's blog post, we take a closer look at what you need to consider and how stair lighting ultimately looks best.

Illuminating stairs and steps may not be the first thought that crosses your mind when installing lights in your home or public space. Many don't think about it until later in the process, when cables and wires can be harder to hide.

Who should use the stairs?

First and foremost, it's important to consider who will be using the stairs. If the staircase is located at home, this point is less important as people are used to walking on the steps. However, if the staircase is in a public place where it is used by many types of people around the clock, this is crucial. Elderly and visually impaired people have a greater need for the right lighting, as shadows can be fatal and lead to falls and broken limbs. This is avoided by getting professional guidance on everything from lighting type to other specifications such as lumen output and color temperature.

What type of lighting should you choose?

There are countless ways to light a staircase and the only limit is your imagination. For example, should the steps be illuminated, or should the light only come from the wall or ceiling? Or perhaps a combination of both?

One of the most popular solutions is our LED tapes. LED strips are highly effective as you can customize the length exactly as needed. The tape is cut to the desired length and can then be mounted with 3M tape. LED ribbons come with either 60 or 120 LEDs per meter and are also available in many different variants. One of the latest additions is our TUNABLEWHITEFLEX, which is one of the brightest variants on the market. With this LED ribbon, the color temperature can be adjusted, so you can always ensure the right atmosphere.

In addition to LED strips, you can use everything from underground spots to wall-mounted luminaires. Our NS96 or NS45 could be a good suggestion here, but of course it depends on a number of factors such as the location of the staircase and the available space.

Does the chosen product meet your requirements?

Navigating the many LED products can feel like a jungle, and many people get lost in the process. Product data sheets contain a wide range of information, some of which is more important than others in a given situation. It is therefore important to be aware of whether the chosen product meets the requirements for stair lighting.
