Hairdresser lighting

Can lighting really affect the customer experience in your salon?

An interior designer might dare to say that there are many "rules" when it comes to choosing the right lighting for salons. First and foremost, it's all about making customers feel welcome and giving employees good working conditions. In this week's blog post, we give our take on which elements are important to consider when choosing lighting for your salon.

Pay attention to accurate color reproduction

Maybe you've heard from others that they've had their hair colored at a salon and when they walked out of the salon into the sunlight - the hair color changed? That's a situation every salon wants to avoid. The simple solution would be to install lights that have the right color rendering. As we've said many times before, color rendering is determined by an index that indicates the light source's ability to reproduce colors in relation to daylight. We recommend using lamps with a CRI value of 86 or higher.

Highlight interiors and guests with color temperatures

You can choose bulbs in different color temperatures ranging from warm to cold light. A warm temperature (2,700K-3,500K) is most flattering on guests' skin and will complement most interiors. Colder color temperatures can be equated to daylight, which is typically not the best temperature in a salon.

Eliminate shadows

How your guests feel when sitting in the salon chair is extremely important, as a positive experience enhances the customer's perception of you and your salon. The easiest way to minimize facial shadows is to place your lighting by the mirror on either side. Spotlights on the ceiling, for example, will create shadows and are not recommended.

Use good quality lighting

LED bulbs have revolutionized energy-efficient lighting, giving you a wide range of benefits that are ideal for salons. While these types of lights typically have a higher upfront cost, think of it as a long-term investment that's well worth it. LED lighting has a longer lifespan, uses less energy and offers long-term savings on maintenance and replacement, among other things.

With many manufacturers offering LED lights, it can be difficult to choose the lighting that matches your needs. Look for LED bulbs that replicate halogen bulbs that have a high CRI and light quality.
